DSS Releases Abaribe After 5 Days In Detention

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the senator representing Abia South senatorial district, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, from detention after five days.

Confirming the senator’s release on Tuesday night, his spokesman, Uchenna Awom, said, “About 6.32pm on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe walked into freedom after five days in the DSS gulag.

“Abaribe, who was granted administrative bail, was released to his lawyers led by Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume, SAN.

“The collective calls and demand for his release have shown the great spirit of Nigerians for justice.”

The secret police had picked up the senator on Friday for standing as a guarantor for missing leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu, who was granted bail in April 2017 by a Federal High Court in the FCT, disappeared from public appearances in September.

He was due to appear in court in October 2017 for continuation of his trial for treason charges.

Another guarantor, Tochukwu Uchendu on Tuesday appealed to the court to order Kanu’s arrest after he was threatened with arrest for failure to produce the accused.

Soldiers invaded Kanu’s home in Abia State in September, after which the IPOB leader disappeared, with fears rising that he might have been killed by the security forces.
