Contrary to the claim by the Ekiti State Government that detained member of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Afolabi Akanni had died in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), the security agency has produced him alive.
Akanni, who was looking frail amidst fears of illness, was presented to journalists at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
According to The Cable, the lawmaker, who positively identified himself to journalists present, could barely carry himself.
Also, his eyes were said to have looked red and shadowy, while his frame looked subdued.
Akanni was on March 4, 2016, arrested alongside other state government officials on suspicion of financial impropriety.
However, a March 11 court order directed the DSS to release the detained lawmakers and other Ekiti state government officials in its custody.
But a counter press conference by the DSS on Thursday afternoon, the security agency said the lawmaker was arrested on suspicion of a serious breach of national security, which falls under its purview to investigate.
At the press conference, Abdullahi Garba of the DSS accused the Ekiti State Government of “mischief” for claiming that Akanni had died in its custody.
The security agency also said it did not get the court order that directed it to release the lawmaker.
