DSS Lists Greatest Threats To 2019 General Election

1 Min Read

The Department of State Services (DSS) has identified hate speech and insecurity as the greatest threats to the successful conduct of the 2019 general election in the country.

The Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Review of Security Infrastructure in Nigeria, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, quoted  Director General of DSS, Lawal Daura, as saying this.

Lawan on Wednesday presented the report of the ad-hoc committee to the chamber, during which he quoted Daura as saying that “the country is getting more divided like never before due to the lack of synergy between traditional institutions and security agencies, as well as hate speeches that have dominated the political space”.

Quoting from the 38-page report, Lawan also quoted Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai as highlighting Boko Haram threats, militancy, cultism, secessionist and extremist groups, inter-ethnic, religious and communal violence, as major security challenges plaguing the nation.

Commenting further, Lawan said the security agencies needed professional skills and improved equipment and technologies to curtail security breaches in the country.
