A 35-year-old driver, Daniel Mark, was on Wednesday arraigned by the police in a Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court, Kaduna, for allegedly defiling a neigbour’s daughter.
The defendant, a resident of Nasarawa Ward, Kaduna, is standing trial on a two-count charge of act of gross indecency and assault.
The prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, told the court that the defendant’s neighbour, one Maryam Umar, reported the matter at the Kakuri Police Station on Feb. 28.
Baba told the court that the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant lured the complainant’s 4-year-old daughter into his room on Feb. 18 and had canal knowledge of her.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant had threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone about the incident.
He added that during police investigation the defendant confessed to have committed the crime.
The offence contravened Sections 260 and 240 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs Zainab Mohammed, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must be residence within the jurisdiction of the court and submit two recent passport photographs.
Mohammed also ordered that the sureties must present evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government and adjourned hearing until March 14. (NAN)
