The Anambra State House of Assembly was on Thursday thrown into commotion following the decision of the Speaker of the House to abscond with the mace which is a symbol of authority.
The decision by the Speaker of the house comes after 28 members of the House assembled at the hallowed chamber to impeach the speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.
Mrs. Rita Maduagwu was reported to have disappeared with the staff of authority of the House after she sensed the moves to impeach her by the members.
The Governor of the state, Willie Obiano, was reported to have drove to the state House of Assembly after he heard about the impeachment move by the House members.
Gov. Willie Obiano was reported to have addressed the 28 members of the state House of Assembly making the move to impeach and replace the speaker.
The members who are members of the APGA political party were however reported to have rejected the Governor’s intervention in the matter.
In the absence of the Speaker of the House after she noticed the resolve of the House members to impeach her, the Majority Leader, Victor Okoye, adjourned the sitting till Tuesday, April 11.
One of the state lawmakers, Mr. Onyebuchi Offor, representing Ekwusigo constituency while speaking to journalists said: “We came this morning to hold our normal session, only to be disappointed that the Speaker had absconded with the mace.
“We have had poor leadership under Rita Maduagwu. But I’m assuring you that justice must prevail. No matter where she runs to, we have determined to take a decision on the leadership of this House. There is no going back, because we are here to serve Anambra people well.”
