Drake Beats out Eminem, David Guetta and Rihanna to Emerge Most Streamed Artist on Spotify In 2015

3 Min Read
Snub: Drake The rapper had two #1 albums during the year – one on his own and one with Future. Neither received an Album of the Year nom. Though Drake has amassed five #1 albums over the years, he has yet to break into that top category. But Drake’s solo album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, was nominated for Best Rap Album. Note: Drake’s late-in-the-year smash “Hotline Bling” wasn’t entered for Record or Song of the Year, so its non-nomination is not a surprise.

Spotify users are clearly listening to Drake. The rapper was the most streamed artist of the year globally.

The music streaming service announced its end-of-the-year list on Tuesday and said Drake earned 1.8 billion streams in 2015.

Rihanna was the year’s most streamed female performer with 1 billion streams, while Major Lazer’s ubiquitous hit, Lean On, was the most streamed song of the year with 540 million streams.

The Weeknd’s breakout album, Beauty Behind the Madness, was the most streamed album of the year, beating Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which was No. 2.

It was Ed Sheeran, however, who took the most coveted title: most streamed artist of all time.

The Brit Award-winning singer’s music, which includes former number ones Thinking Out Loud and Sing, has notched up more than three billion plays, and over 59 million listeners, since the service started in 2008.

As rapper Eminem drops to second spot, Drake, David Guetta and Rihanna fill up the top five most played artists of all time on Spotify.

In the United States, Drake topped the list of most streamed artists, followed by the Weeknd, Kanye West, Sheeran and Eminem.

However, Sheeran topped the UK list, coming ahead of The Weeknd, Drake, Sam Smith and Kanye West.

The Weeknd’s Abel Makkonen Tesfaye said: ‘It’s been an insane year working with some really talented people. Thank you to the fans on Spotify for making Beauty Behind The Madness the most streamed album of 2015.’

Diplo and Switch, the producers behind Major Lazer, said: ‘One Love, One Lazer!! Thanks to you: our friends, fam and global squad, Lean On is the world’s most streamed track!!’
