Senator Shehu Sani has advised President Muhammadu Buhari against leaving a legacy of rights violations behind at the end of his tenure.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, said that history would not be kind to the president if he allows himself to be tempted, provoked or instigated into abusing the rights of Nigerians.
The vocal ex-lawmaker stated this on Twitter on Wednesday amidst a clampdown by security agencies on #RevolutionNow protesters in Lagos and some other parts of the country on Monday.
A presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Omoyele Sowore, was also arrested in Lagos on Saturday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) officials and whisked away to Abuja in connection with the protest.
Also, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat have been held by the DSS since 2015 despite several courts granted them bail.

Although the Kaduna State High Court granted the couple bail to travel for medical attention in India on Monday and the DSS vowed to comply with the ruling, they remain in custody nearly two days after.
However, Sani said that Nigerians would not defend Buhari’s actions when he leaves office, urging him to toe the path of rule of law.
He wrote, “The President must avoid leaving behind a poisonous legacy of rights violations no matter the temptation, provocation & instigation by those encouraging it.
“Nigerians don’t have the culture & history of defending the actions of their Presidents When they leave office.”
