The ninth Senate has confirmed the appointment of Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as President of Appeal court.
Ahmad Lawan, Senate President who confirmed Mensem’s appointment disclosed the decision was necessary to avoid a constitutional crisis in the third arm of government.
Noting that the ninth Senate will be embarking on a two weeks break to mark its one year anniversary since 2019 election, Lawan said it was important to confirm Dongban-Mensem’s appointment before the break.
According to Vanguard, Lawan said:
“We are adjourning tomorrow (Thursday) for two weeks, by the grace of God, to celebrate our one year anniversary. And there could easily be a constitutional crisis if we don’t carry out the exercise of confirmation before we leave tomorrow. “This is clearly omitted in the Order Paper, and we find it necessary to consider it so that our Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters is able to do the screening today.
