US President, Donald Trump has called African nations and Haiti “shithole countries”.
According to Reuters, quoting two unnamed sources, the controversial American leader made the remarks when a team from Congress presented a newly-drafted immigrant bill before him at the White House.
“Why do we want all these people from Africa here? They’re shithole countries … We should have more people from Norway,” Trump reportedly said, according to one of the sources.
The second source said that Trump also queried the need for having more Haitians in the US.
Present at the meeting, according to the sources, were Democratic Senator Dick Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, and some top government officials.
Reuters reported that the lawmakers were describing how certain immigration programmes operate, including one to give safe haven in the United States to people from countries suffering from natural disasters or civil strife, when the president made the comment.
This latest accusation is coming few weeks after Trump allegedly said Nigerians would never return to their “huts” after seeing America, Haitians had AIDS, and Afghans were terrorists. The Trump administration denied that report which was first reported by New York Times.
The latest comment credited to Trump has drawn condemnation from political and other quarters, with a congresswoman describing it as “unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values.”
