Don seeks FG’s political will on 2017 budget implementation

President Buhari signing the 2016 budget

A don, Malam Bashir Yankuzu, on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to show strong political will towards implementation of the 2017 budget passed by the National Assembly on Thursday.

Yankuzu, who lectures in the Department of Educational Services, Federal University of Technology, Minna, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Minna.

He said the government should reverse the trend of merely presenting beautiful budget without clear improvement on Nigerians’ economic conditions.

He observed that proper budget handling by government, especially in areas of infrastructure, was capable of building citizens confidence in government.

The lecturer, therefore, urged the government to focus more on infrastructure renewal to boost economic activities.

“The change masses clamoured and voted for is not beautiful wordings and technicalities of budget, but one that is understood and impact on the populace.

“What will show the presence of positive change is improvement in key areas like power, roads, health, education, security and employment,’’ Yankuzu said.

He also called for harmonious working understanding between the legislature and executive arms for the governed.

The lawmakers raised the budget figure from N7.28 trillion earlier proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2016, to N7.44 trillion. (NAN)
