Don backs bill seeking creation of Nigerian Education Bank

2 Min Read

Prof. Damola Oke of the Lagos State University has expressed support for the bill before the House of Representative seeking the establishment of Nigerian Education Bank to provide loans for students.

Oke, a Professor of Botany, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that the bill was worthy of support as many people could not afford education.

According to him, many Nigerians are finding it difficult to eat and therefore cannot pay school fees.

“When I was in the university, there was a provision like that; but it was never repaid.

“If it is well-managed this time, that will be good.

“I believe everybody that needs scholarship should get it, it is a commendable move,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that a bill seeking to ensure the provision of loans for students wishing to further their education to higher levels passed second reading in the House of Representatives recently.

The bill, sponsored by House leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, sought to provide easy access to higher education for Nigerians by the provision of loans from the Nigerian Education Bank.

Gbajabiamila had argued that such loans should be interest-free as Nigeria has the natural resources to fund such loans. (NAN)
