Dr Aliyu Jibia of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has advised the Katsina State Government to introduce new incentives for teachers in the state.
“The incentives, if introduced, will boost the morale of primary and secondary school teachers in the state,’’ he said.
Jibia gave the advice on Monday in Katsina during the opening of a one-day seminar organised by the Katsina Forum, an NGO, established to sensitise and mobilise youths to be self-reliant.
The theme of the seminar is: “How to ensure equal access to correct and quality education in Katsina State.’’
Jibia said that the new incentives should include: vehicle loan, housing loan, regular promotion, prompt payment of leave grants and monthly salaries.
“The secondary and primary school teachers should be encouraged to further their studies and full in – service training should be given to them,” he said.
According to the don, teachers are the backbone of education.
“If neglected, no tangible achievement will be recorded in the educational sector despite the huge amount of money set aside for education in the state.’’
He said that the state government had the money to give the teachers the necessary incentives.
Jibia said that renovation of school buildings without incentives to teachers would not enhance the development of the sector in the state
The senior lecturer lamented that the teachers had been relegated to the background and this had seriously affected their morale to deliver the right education.
Earlier, the chairman of the Katsina Forum, Alhaji Muktagah Darma, had urged prominent citizens of Katsina to invest in the educational sector.
He appealed to high net worth citizens to introduce private scholarship that would assist students with poor backgrounds to further their studies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Darma was the former Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Development Trust Fund (PTDF) (NAN)
