Domestic staff in court for allegedly stealing employer’s gold necklaces worth N 5.1m

A 19-year-old domestic staff, Alice Egun, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing five gold necklaces worth N5.1 million belonging to her employer..

Egun, who resides with her employer in Iju Ishaga area of  Lagos, is charged with two counts of conspiracy and stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP Akeem Raji, told the court that defendant committed the offence with some others persons, at large on March 8, at 2 p.m. at  her employer’s residence.

Raji alleged that the defendant stole the gold necklaces belonging to the complainant, Hajiya Joke Kudehinbu.

The prosecutor said that the defendant left the house with the stolen items to an unknown destination.

“The complainant’s sister later sighted the defendant at Ojota and alerted the police, arrested her.

“All efforts to retrieve the said gold from the defendant failed,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates seven years jail term for  stealing from one’s employer, while Section  411 provides two years for conspiracy.

Chief Magistrate O.A. Layinka admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Layinka ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She added that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 20 for hearing. (NAN)
