Doctors’ Strike: COVID-19 Patients Not Affected in Bayelsa

Resident doctors at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Yenagoa in Bayelsa withdrew their services on Monday in compliance with the directives from its national leadership.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that patients admitted at FMC were discharged on Monday and compelled to seek medical care at private clinics as the resident doctor downed tools.

Dr Divine Irole, President, FMC Yenagoa chapter of Association of Resident Doctor (ARD) however, said members deployed at COVID-19 Isolation Centres were exempted from the ongoing nationwide strike by resident doctors.

She said that the hospital remained open as ‘few’ Consultants at the hospital were attending to patients who thronged the medical facility.

Mrs Isu Akenge, said that her husband who was at the intensive care unit was abruptly discharged and transferred to a private clinic

“Due to the strike by doctors at the FMC, we were advised to seek medical attention elsewhere and my husband has been taken to a private clinic and many others in the same ward with him were moved out,” she said.

Also, Mr Bernard Akpedi, Spokesman of the FMC Yenagoa,  said that although the resident doctors were on strike, the senior doctors (consultants) were providing skeletal services at the hospital.
