Divorce Court: Ekiti, Lagos based men seek marriage annulment over threat to life

5 Min Read

In this edition of Divorce Court, the husbands are seeking to be separated from their wives over alleged threat to life.

The first case comes from Igando, Lagos, whilst the other is from Ado-Ekiti.

A civil servant, Musibau Lawal, has urged an Igando Customary Court, Lagos State, to dissolve his six-year-old marriage to Omowunmi for alleged defamation of character and threat to life.

Musibau, 45, told the court that “my wife had made me a laughing stock in my office as she always reports me to my boss and colleagues that I am irresponsible.

“She sometimes came to rain abuses on me, calling me all sort of names and her action is now threatening my job,’’ he said.

The petitioner alleged that his wife threatened his life with dangerous objects.

“There was a night she wanted to stab me with a knife in my sleep. If not for God that made me to open my eyes, I could have been a dead person by now,’’ he said.

He said that he had set up business for his wife on many occasions, but after three months, such endeavours usually collapsed due to mismanagement.

The petitioner begged the court to dissolve the union, saying that he was no longer in love with his wife.

“Please separate us. If I continue to live with Omowunmi, she will kill me one day,’’ he said.

The respondent, Omowunmi, 35, a fashion designer, admitted that she actually threatened her husband with weapons in the past.

“I only used those weapons to threaten him, I did not mean to harm him, I was only using them as self-defence,” Omowunmi said.

The mother of one said what used to cause quarrel between them was that her husband always accused her of sleeping around with men.

Omowunmi said that her husband had refused to give her food and also denied her sex for some months now.

She claimed that she had gone to her husband’s office to report him, hoping that the visit would cause him to turn a new leaf.

The respondent pleaded with the court not to grant her husband’s wish as she was still interested in the union.

President of the court, Mr R.I. Adeyeri, adjourned the case till September 25.

The second incident

A man, Kayode Fabusola, has urged an Ado-Ekiti Customary Court in Ekiti State to dissolve his 15-year-old marriage to his wife, Roseline, for alleged threat to life and refusal to listen to corrections.

Kayode, 65, whose petition first came up for mention on June 11, also alleged that his wife did not care for him, loved to smoke and denied members of his family access to the children.

He told the court that his wife would not allow his family to come close to him to the extent that she fought with his younger brother’s wife.

The petitioner also told the court that his wife had not been cooking for him, saying there was no personal relationship between them as husband and wife.

Kayode, a father of three,  said the wife gave him no rest of mind and threatened to kill him if he supported his relations.

He claimed that his wife would not take corrections and urged the court to dissolve the marriage.

Roseline, 40, denied not accommodating her husband’s family, instead she accused her husband’s family of not accepting her.

She said it was her husband’s younger brother’s wife that always frustrated her life and told her that she would pack out of the house.

Roseline said she always cooks for her husband with the little money she earns from her petty trading, while denying threatening her husband.

The respondent, therefore, urged the court not to dissolve the marriage because of their children.

President of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, reserved judgment till September 25.
