The Senator representing Kogi West was denied bail in his hearing regarding alleged conspiracy and possession of illegal arms.
He appeared before a magistrate in Kogi and the prosecution counsel argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try the case. This point was countered by counsel to Senator Melaye, Mike Ozekhome, who said that the court did indeed have jurisdiction.
Ozekhome added that according to Section 97 of the Penal Code, the offence of conspiracy is bailable according to the Kogi State Administration of Criminal Justice.
This was denied, however, as Chief Magistrate Suleiman Abdulahi remanded the Senator into custody for 39 days until his next hearing slated for June 11, 2018.
Melaye has been in hot water ever since it was alleged that he had been the mastermind behind the arming of some political thugs who had been wreaking havoc in Kogi state.
After the arrest of a number of suspects, Melaye was fingered as the one who gave the thugs arms in the first place. He was subsequently arrested, but when he was being transported to Kogi state where he was to be questioned, he attempted a daring escape which led to him getting injured.
He was then taken to the hospital, where police rearrested him and placed him in their custody.
