The stats says it all; in six Premier League games, Chelsea have won five and have scored Nineteen goals. Eight of that belonging to Diego Costa.
Jose Mourinho always believed Diego Costa would be the man to turn Chelsea into title winners. Now his team agrees and it is not just Costa’s prowess which has impressed.
“Diego is so good, I like him so much. He makes so many jokes,” said Oscar, whose tap-in opener set the stage for Costa’s latest surgical strike in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
“He is so funny. Every time, he jokes. He plays tricks. But I know and he knows he needs to continue to do what he’s doing on the pitch.
“The difference between last season and this is that we have Diego – and Diego is scoring goals.
“We have good midfield players and Costa scores a lot of goals, so many of them. It is working well. I think we are better than last season, because last year we played very well, but didn’t score the goals.
“But this season we have Costa and Didier Drogba and Loic Remy and the midfield is scoring more goals. Diego has come in and he has adapted very well and for us he has been very good.”
Costa’s latest goal was a near- post header that beat Brad Guzan in an instant, summing up what the striker has brought to the Blues.
Costa has been unable to train in recent weeks due to his hamstring problems and Mourinho would prefer him not to be selected for international duty next month.
Willian is another Brazilian who seems to be coming to form, he had an assist and a goal in Saturday’s game and the coach expects more from the former Shakhtar Donesk man.
“Willian didn’t start the season well,” he added. “But I think everyone that came from the Brazil national team without a proper holiday or a proper pre-season did not start in a very strong way.
“It wasn’t about the World Cup and what happened. Some of them are making fun between them about that. The problem was physical, not psychological. The World Cup is history but all of them, they are coming step by step. Oscar is the same. Now they are getting into the intensity of the game.’’
It was only Chelsea’s second clean sheet of the season, although as Mourinho pointed out, “They didn’t have a shot. The game was easy to control. From minute one, everything was under control.”
