The President and the ex-President met yesterday in a behind closed doors meeting in which they discussed the current problems in the Niger Delta.
The meeting was held at the residence of the President in Abuja.
According to Leaders’ NG, a source claimed that the President urged Jonathan to use his ties to the region to talk to all major stakeholders in the region starting from the governors of the region who still have tremendous respect for him.
The source further stated that Buhari stressed the importance of Jonathan’s intervention as if the activities of the militants continued unchecked, the Nigerian economy could be crippled.
President Buhari was also reported to have pleaded with the former president to talk to traditional rulers, religious leaders and ex-militants in the region as they would be more inclined to listen to Jonathan.
Jonathan was in turn reported to have responded saying he’d lost touch with everyone in the region since he left office over a year ago but with the situation at hand will begin to leverage on his contacts to make sure he speaks to people.
He reportedly assured President Buhari that he wouldn’t sit and watch if Nigeria was in danger and that he’d do all he could to make sure there’s peace in the Niger Delta region.
