Afrobeats singer and producer, Maleek Berry, has shared an intriguing story about his early days with fellow artist Davido. Speaking on the ‘90s Baby’ podcast, the ‘Kontrol’ hitmaker revealed that Davido, despite his wealthy background, pretended to be poor while they worked together in the studio.
Berry recounted his surprise when he visited Davido’s father’s mansion, having previously believed Davido to be just another struggling artist. “I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey and record him,” Berry recalled.
He explained that they were connected through one of Davido’s cousins via social media. “He wasn’t even known then. We were just two Nigerian guys who loved music and got connected. He acted around us like one of those poor kids. But when I pulled up to his dad’s crib, I was surprised. There’s money and there’s money!”
Berry was taken aback by the wealth he witnessed, noting that Davido blended in seamlessly with them despite his affluent background. “When I saw the tower, I was like, okay, they’re rich.”
Berry also revealed that it was Davido who later connected him to Wizkid, further cementing their long-standing relationship in the music industry.
