Davido Credits D’Banj for Pioneering Global Afrobeats Success

1 Min Read

Afrobeats superstar Davido has acknowledged D’Banj’s significant contribution to the global popularity of African music. In a recent interview with Apple Music, Davido stated that D’Banj’s 2012 hit single “Oliver Twist” was a turning point, inspiring international bookings for Nigerian artists.

Davido recalled seeing Kanye West in D’Banj’s “Oliver Twist” video on YouTube, which marked a shift in the global music scene. He noted that D’Banj’s success paved the way for other African artists, including himself, to gain international recognition.

However, some observers have disputed Davido’s claim, citing Nigerian music legends like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Majek Fashek, who achieved international fame in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Additionally, 2Face’s hit song “African Queen” won international awards and was featured in the 2006 American film “Phat Girlz,” predating D’Banj’s global success.
