2 Min Read

Lawrence C. Nnoli , a customer of Guaranty Trust Bank, GTBank has filed a lawsuit against the bank over illegal deductions in his account.

The hearing of the case which held at a Federal High court in Lagos was presided by Justice R.M Aikawa.
GTBank through his Defence counsel,  Mr Osemudiamen Umane admitted to some of the claims made by the Plaintiff, saying the bank indeed owed Lawrence some money which has subsequently been paid back.

It all started when Lawrence, the claimant noticed some illegal charges made on his account. He immediately raised an alarm and notified the bank.

GTB refunded the illegal deductions after Lawrence lodged a formal complaint.

After few months, the deductions began again. Lawrence upon noticing asked for his account to be closed down. He wrote a formal letter to this effect in December 2018.

Instead of closing down the customer’s account as requested, GTBank continued with the illegal deductions with claims that it was only charging the customer for money it failed to deduct in 2017 due to an accounting error.

The claimant became frantic and desperate at this point and all effort to reverse the deductions proved abortive. The claimant hence resorted to settling the case in a court of law.
