Crew members on a Norwegian cruise ship that suffered a recent COVID-19 outbreak were on Thursday re-tested for the virus, the country’s officials said.

The medical officer in the Northern port city, Kathrine Kristoffersen, said the decision to re-test the more than 160 people on MS Roald Amundsen was made after several people presented with symptoms of the coronavirus and some had shared cabins.

The vessel has been docked there since Friday when passengers disembarked.

As of Wednesday, 53 COVID-19 cases, including 37 crew members, have been detected on the vessel operated by the Hurtigruten cruise and shipping line.

The University Hospital of North Norway in Tromso said it was treating five people, including one passenger, from the MS Roald Amundsen for COVID-19.

The infections were linked to two cruises in July.

Hurtigruten on Monday temporarily suspended all expedition sailings for its three cruise vessels.

However, Police in Tromso said they were interviewing crew members to establish whether the company or crew had violated quarantine rules relating to communicable diseases.

Separately, tests were being conducted for 134 crew and passengers on another Hurtigruten cruise vessel, the MS Spitsbergen that docked on Thursday in Tromso.

Meanwhile, the cruise vessel SeaDream 1, operated by the family-owned company SeaDream Yacht Club, was allowed to leave Bodo, Northern Norway after none of the more than 160 people onboard had the virus.

The tests were ordered after a SeaDream 1 passenger, who recently returned to Denmark had tested for the virus, but had not presented symptoms.
