An American woman, Patricia Ann Spann, has been sentenced to two years in prison for marrying her own daughter.

The 45-year-old Oklahoma resident was also sentenced to eight years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender on Tuesday, after pleading guilty to the felony offence of incest and admitted marrying her daughter, Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, 26.

The two reportedly married in March 2016 after same-sex marriage became legal in the state.

The duo said they “hit it off” at the time and decided to make their union official.

The Department of Human Services discovered the marriage during a routine child welfare checkup.

Ms Spann had in 2008 equally married her then 18-year-old son who had the marriage annulled in 2010 on incest charges.

Also in October 2017, Misty Velvet decided to annul the wedding, claiming that she was induced into it.

She said her mother told her she had consulted three attorneys who said there would be problem with the union.

On her part, Patricia Ann Spann said she believed there would be no problems with the union as she was not listed as Misty Velvet’s mother on her birth certificate.

Misty Velvet was in November 2017 sentenced to ten years of probation and mandated to undergo counselling.
