Court sentences man to 1 year in prison for cheating used clothes seller of N350,000

A Jos Upper Area Court III, sitting in Kasuwan Nama, on Thursday sentenced a food vendor, Chiwendu Okporoama, to one year in prison for cheating  a used clothes seller of N350, 000.

The Judge,  Mr Yahaya Mohammed, convicted Okporoama, after he pleaded guilty.

Mohammed however gave Okporoama an option to pay a fine of  N20, 000 fine.

The judge also ordered Okporoama to pay the N350, 000.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Jonathan Danladi, told the court that the complainant, Mrs Charity Emenike, who resides at No J 617, Apata Street Jos, reported the case on Aug. 5, at the Laranto Divisional Police Station.

He said that the convict deceived the complainant  into believing that he will supply her with a bail of second- hand clothing, popularly called “Okirika”.

Danladi said that after collecting the money, the convict failed to supply the clothes and also refused to return the complainant’s money.

He told the court that during police investigation Okporoama, admitted to the offence.

He said that the offence contravened Section 322 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.(NAN)
