Court sentences 6 men over internet fraud in Ibadan

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Ibadan Zonal Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of six persons over internet fraud ‘yahoo yahoo’ to various prison terms.

Agboola Khalid Babatunde, Okuneye Olamilekan Damilola, Quadri Ahmed Olawale, Okafor Chibuzor Michael, Lawal Emmanuel Adekunle, and Victor Abumere Aigbe are the convicts.

Babatunde, Olawale, and Aigbe were each charged with one count of impersonation, which is a violation of Section 484 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 38, Laws of Oyo State 2000, and Michael was charged with two counts of stealing ‘internet fraud’.

Damilola was charged with one count of aiding and abetting, while Adekunle was charged with one count of impersonation.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them by the EFCC.

They all pleaded guilty to their respective charges. As a result, prosecution counsel Modupe Akinkoye, Abdulrasheed Suleiman, Mabas Mabur, and Shamsuddeen Bashir reviewed the facts of the cases and urged the courts to convict and sentence the defendants accordingly.

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, convicted and sentenced Adekunle to one year imprisonment, while Justice Bayo Taiwo of the State High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, convicted and sentenced Olawale and Aigbe to six months community service and Michael to two months community service.

Babatunde was sentenced to three months community service by Justice Olusola Adetujoye of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, while Damilola was sentenced to six months in prison by Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In addition, the courts ordered the convicts to repay their victims and forfeit all items recovered from them to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
