A man who escaped police detention after being arrested for breaking a bottle on another man’s head has been sentenced to six months in prison by a Chief Magistrate Court in Akure, Ondo State.
Taye Isaac was initially arrested and detained by the Ondo State Police Command for breaking a bottle on Sunday Akinola’s head, but escaped from police custody in the middle of the night.
When he was re-arrested on November 4, the police wasted no time as the accused was charged to court not long after.
The police prosecutor Pelumi Adejuwon in his submission before the court said the accused’s actions contravened section 135(a) of the Criminal Code Vol. 37, Laws of Ondo State, Nigeria 2006.
The accused person pleaded guilty to the charges read out to him, which the prosecution tendered as evidence before the court.
However, counsel to the accused, Mrs. Grace Obanigba appealed to the court for leniency, seeing that the accused did not waste the time of the court.
The presiding judge, Mr. Sunday Adedapo went ahead to sentence him to six months in prison with hard labour, with an option of N20,000 fine.
