A Rivers man, Clinton Kanu, has been granted his freedom after he had spent 27 years in jail for a crime he never committed.
Following his release, Kanu, who is now 57, has begun to advocate for the need to reform the judicial processes in Nigeria.
While reporting the man’s ordeal, the Rivers State Television revealed that Kanu was arrested when he thirty years old, and after his trial in 1992, he was sent to the Port Harcourt Maximum Prisons.
While he was in jail, Kanu appealed the sentence of the lower court and filed for a hearing at the appeal court. However, the case was dragged for years and still did not have any headway until his case was presented at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
On April 5, 2019, the murder charge was dropped against him, declaring him innocent and free to go back home.
As a result of his experience, Kanu has begun to clamor for the restructuring of Nigeria’s judicial system.
