Cote d’Ivoire elections return ruling coalition to power

1 Min Read

Parliamentary Elections in Cote d’Ivoire returned the governing coalition of President Alassane Ouattara to power, with 155 seats in the 255 seat legislature, the Country’s Electoral Commission reports on Tuesday.

The ruling Rassemblement Houphouetiste pour la Democratie et la Paix (RHDP) faced opposition from parties including the Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI), founded by former president and war-crimes suspect Laurent Gbagbo.

The FPI received only 3 seats.

Voter participation, according to the election commission, was around 34 per cent.

Only about 6 million people had registered to vote, even though at least 10 million of the West African country’s 24 million people are believed to be of voting age. (dpa/NAN)
