A Youth Corps member serving in Adamawa, Mrs Rashidat Olalade, on Tuesday facilitated the release of 10 prison inmates serving various jail terms in Jimeta Prison of Yola town.
Olalade who paid the fines of the affected inmates, said she was motivated by their plight and the need to contribute her quota towards prison decongestion.
Olalade who hailed from Ogun state, said that the N45, 000 used to off set the fines of the suspects was realized through contributions she mobilized from the public.
She urged members of the public, particularly the rich to extend their hands of support to the prison in freeing such inmates.
The Youth corps member, who, also handed over some items comprising slippers, soap and insecticides to the prison authorities for the usage of inmates in the prison, urged those freed to be of good behavior.
Commenting on the development, the Assistant Comptroller in charge of Jimeta prison, Mr Bakari Elon, lauded the effort by Olalade and urged others to emulate her in helping to decongest prisons nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of those who regain their freedom, Julius Mathias thanked Olalade for the gesture and urged others to emulate her.
“We are happy to regain our freedom; glory be to God and we say thank you, we will never forget you and promise to be of good behaviour as we go back into the society,” Mathias said. (NAN)
