The Surgeon-General of the United States, Jerome Adams, has advised Americans against buying face masks, saying they are ineffective for protecting the general public against contracting coronavirus.
He stated this in a series of tweets via his official Twitter handle over the weekend.
Adams also said that when they buy up face masks, the general public is putting the lives of healthcare providers at risk.
He wrote, “Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS!
“They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”
According to Adams, instead of buying up face masks, the general public would fare better if they observed other measures such as self-quarantine when feeling ill and washing hands with soap and water regularly.
The Surgeon-General added, “The best way to protect yourself and your community is with everyday preventive actions, like staying home when you are sick and washing hands with soap and water, to help slow the spread of respiratory illness.
“Get your #FluShot– fewer flu patients = more resources for#COVID19″
