2 Min Read

Researchers from the University of Benin have produced a clinically tested, functional ventilator to help in the fight against coronavirus in Edo State.

This was announced by Benedicta Ehanire, the public relations officer for the University of Benin on Tuesday. She said the ventilator was produced by researchers from the Engineering and Medical Science Faculties.

The research group, led by Professor Kesington Obahiagbon took the uniqueness of the Nigerian environment into consideration during production of the ventilator.

The ventilator has been presented to the University Management led by Vice Chancellor, Lilian Salami.

“A clinically-tested ventilator produced by a team of researchers in the Faculty of Engineering and Medical Sciences has been presented to the management of the University.

“The invention is in response to the vice-chancellor’s challenge to various experts in the university to make relevant marks to showcase the institution’s talents.”

Ehanire said in a statement.

The leader of the Research team, Professor Obahiagbon said the ventilator was produced to work for one hour without electricity. A dual mode was also designed for adults and children.

The feat comes as many countries have started to harness internal resources to produce materials needed in the fight against coronavirus.

Countries like Madagascar and Senegal have been in the news for feats in testing kit and personal protective equipment production.

Nigeria currently has 1532 confirmed Coronavirus cases in the country with 44 deaths.
