Nigeria’s Consul-General in South Africa, Ambassador Uche Ajulu-Okeke, has urged Nigerians resident in that country to desist from acts capable of tarnishing Nigeria’s image.
Okeke gave the charge on Sunday at the inauguration of newly elected officials of National Association of Yoruba Descendants of Southern Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa.
She also urged them to be law abiding and look for ventures that would attract investments at home.
She noted that Nigerian professionals were doing well and contributing positively to the economy of South Africa.
The Consul-General also tasked the new executive to embark on empowerment programmes to assist members and their families.
While commending them for also working with the Consulate, she also advised them to work with the Nigeria Union, the umbrella body of Nigerians living in South Africa.
The President of the Nigeria Union, South Africa (NUSA), Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, also commended the association for collaborating with the union.
He urged Nigerian communities in South Africa to cooperate and work for the progress of the union.
Prof. Akin Bamigboye, immediate past president of NUSA, also enjoined the new Yoruba leaders to introduce poverty alleviation programmes for members.
He stated that funding was a major challenge and called for efforts to generate revenue for the activities of the union.
Mr Dennis Akinleye, the new President of the association, pledged to work with Nigerian communities in South Africa to form a united Nigerian family.
Akinleye also promised that the body would assist members to improve their living standards in South Africa.

He said the city was looking into immigration challenges of some residents.
