Multiple award-winning music artiste, Yemi Alade says the constant ridicule of Nigerian youth by political office holders must stop.
Yemi Alade stated this in a tweet Thursday night in apparent response to a Lagos lawmaker, Mojisola Alli-Macaulay.
Alli-Macaulay, who represents Amuwo Odofin constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, had trended on Thursday after saying that most youths on social media are high on drugs.
The 43-year-old lawmaker spoke during plenary as the House considered the looting and destruction in Lagos after hoodlums hijacked peaceful EndSARS protests.
“The National Orientation Agency needs to get to work. We need to begin to orientate our young people. They need people who can talk to them from time to time.
“They are high on drugs all the time, most of them. They go to social media and do all sorts of things.
“I’m even scared to give my young children phones because I am scared of what they may see on social media. It is that bad,” Alli-Macaulay said.

The lawmaker was severely reprimanded on social media over the comment.
Reacting, Yemi Alade wrote, “We spend our own money to fly around the world, to represent and be good Ambassadors for Nigeria and Africa.
“NO HELP OR ENCOURAGEMENT FROM OUR GOVERNMENTS. But in other countries artists get grants, come off it ….. this constant ridicule of the YOUTH does not make any sense.”
