Clarke Advocates Amendment Of Constitution

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Robert Clarke, has called for the amendment of the Nigerian Constitution, describing it as the cause of the problems currently faced in the country.

The SAN made this call while speaking on Arise TV’s Good Morning Show, according to him, a constitution that restricts those who can be voted for, or who can vote, was not an ideal constitution, adding that the constitution is the cornerstone of Nigeria’s problems, especially in the country’s political climate.

Clarke also faulted the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex by the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stating that it was not a sign of sanity and was wrong on all fronts.

He further stated that the things that are important to politicians in Nigeria are power and money, noting that they are not meant to be so.

According to him, it is the driving force of 90 percent of the politicians in Nigeria.

Reacting to the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the crisis ongoing in Rivers State, Clarke maintained that the president has no constitutional right to meddle in the affairs of the state. He noted that the era of presidents meddling in the affairs of the state was gone, precisely with the First Republic.

He therefore called for the amendment of the constitution, especially in three areas, including, local government elections, who can belong to a party, and why a party should be the dominant factor in elections in Nigeria.

He noted that once these areas were worked on, the issues of court cases after elections would cease, and the politicians would be able to focus on bringing change and development to the country through their various offices.
