In celebration of Thailand’s gruesome vegetarian festival, which is the annual Taoist Nine Emperor God’s , Chinese communities across Southeast Asia have prepared and put array of objects pushed through devotees cheeks such as: swords, axe, kebab, skewers, handles and a model boat.
These bizzare objects were used to show devotion through rituals such as running over of hot coals or piercing their bodies.
In order to be able to do this, they turned to vegetarians for a duration of one week.
