Today, most ladies are going natural, although most make the decision because it is the new hair trend others actually make the decision because they know the facts that some don’t.
The Atlantic recently featured Teni Adewumi, a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, Fielding School of Public Health who is also the program coordinator at the California nonprofit Black Women for Wellness.
Adewunmi surveyed a number of African American salon workers who use Hair relaxers and other black hair products every day.
She discovered that regular use of these products can lead to Asthma, Dermatitis, Hair loss, Uterine fibroids and Miscarriage.
Adewunmi said “When we held focus groups with salon workers, we found these stories of lack of education on chemical exposures and chemical-related health problems.
“Even though they had all gone to beauty school, there was just really no training around what these products could do to your body and to your reproductive system.”
Harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, Toluene can be found in some hair products.
In Europe cosmetic products must undergo scientific safety assessment before they can be sold.
In the United States, companies can evade permission and this allows dangerous products to slip into the market.
Most hair products used in Nigeria are imported from the United States and Europe.
