Chelsea to face Manchester United with Drogba in the front lines as Remy joins the injury list

3 Min Read

The Blues have already List Diego Costa and his replacement limped off after 16 minutes of the Champions League win over Maribor.

Jose Mourinho faces a striker crisis ahead of Sunday’s trip to Manchester United – but insisted: “I won’t cry about it”.

Already without injured Diego Costa, Chelsea boss Mourinho saw Loic Remy limp out of Tuesday night’s 6-0 thrashing of Maribor.

It leaves 36-year-old Blues legend Didier Drogba to lead the line at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said: “Loic has a muscular injury. I don’t know the dimension and I’m not worried. When a player is injured – play another one.

“We don’t cry on injuries. It’s our philosophy, we don’t cry. We just think one injury means an opportunity for somebody else.”

Asked whether Remy or Costa had a chance of making Chelseas’ team on Sunday, Mourinho added: “No, I don’t expect. No. Or another one. I don’t like to speak about injured players.

“Tomorrow is day off and the doctor is forbidden to call me to speak about injuries. I don’t want to speak about injuries or Manchester United. I don’t want to know.”

Insisting he would have no fears about starting with Drogba, Mourinho went on: “I was not expecting him to play 75 minutes. I spoke with him yesterday and we spoke about 30. But circumstances. He had to go on.

“He was comfortable to play 75 minutes. It was very, very important for Didier. The best thing for a player to improve his condition is to play.”

Eden Hazard hit two against Maribor and ran the show to keep Chelsea two points clear at the top of Group G.

Drogba, who came on as Remy’s replacement, netted his first goal of his second Chelsea spell from the spot on 23 minutes. The penalty made this the 12th consecutive season the Ivorian has scored in the Champions League.

John Terry finished off a fine counter-attacking move – despite looking offside – on 31 minutes. Hazard then forced an own goal from defender Mitja Viler on 54 minutes., before rounding off the scoring with late strikes in the 77th and 90th minutes.

Maribor coach Ante Simundza said: “We could do nothing against a team that is a serious candidate to win the Champions League.”
