Check Social Media abuse and implement Cybercrime Laws – NCC to ICPC

2 Min Read

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, has been urged to look into the abuse of Social media and also implement Cyber crime laws.

The call was made by the Vice-Chairman of the  Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, during a visit with the management team of the Telecom regulatory agency to the ICPC Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

The NCC’s Vice-Chairman said; “We solicit for the cooperation of the ICPC in the full implementation of the Cybercrime Bill which was signed into law in 2015.

“By so doing, we will have a better understanding of the real situation especially at this time that social media practice and cybercrime are on the upsurge.

“Social media give practitioners unfettered access to information dissemination but they must do this with responsibility, failing which the ICPC could come in to curb cases of abuse as this is a part of the process of fighting corruption.

“So, in this regard, we are enlisting the services of the ICPC chairman and his team for a vigorous campaign against these criminals so that the cyberspace could be secured and Nigeria could become a better place for all.”

Reacting to the call, Mr. Nta said the help of the Telecom regulatory agency would also be needed in fighting corruption through obtaining call logs of persons of interest without delay. He added that it was not possible to fight corruption without employing new technologies.
