Carabao Cup: I Was Fuming, Would’ve Strangled Him – Trippier on Guimarães’ Error

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has admitted he was furious with his teammate Bruno Guimarães during their Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

The Magpies secured a 2-1 win to lift the trophy and book a spot in European competition next season. However, Trippier revealed that Guimarães’ mistake, which led to Liverpool’s only goal of the match, left him fuming.

Speaking on CBS Sports, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry asked Trippier how he felt when Guimarães lost the ball, leading to Federico Chiesa’s goal for Liverpool.

“I was fuming! I was fuming. I was fuming,” Trippier said. “In moments like this, it’s about game management. Just one single pass and he’s through on goal, but I can’t blame Bruno—he’s been unbelievable for us.”

When asked if the error could have sparked a Liverpool comeback, Trippier jokingly added, “I would have strangled him.”

Newcastle’s victory marked their first major trophy in 70 years, with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak giving them a 2-0 lead before Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool.
