Cannibals, Nino Mbatha, and Lungisani Magubane were tried in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in South Africa for the murder of Zanele Hlatshwayo in 2017. The court discovered that the men had murdered Zanele with the intention of harvesting her body parts.
Three persons (suspected cannibals) were tired in the case. However, the third suspect, Khayelihle Lamula, was declared innocent since there was no concrete evidence to imprison him.
Police became interested in the case when Mbatha walked into a station in KwaZulu province, asking the men he met for assistance.
They initially believed he was insane until he showed them a human hand and leg form the bag he was carrying. Promptly, the policemen arrested him and soon enough, his arrest led to a series of other arrests. The policemen were able to recover even more body parts.
A witness at the time of his prosecution explained that Magubane gave a comprehensive narration of the roles he played.
And judge Olsen, who was particularly dismayed about their actions emphasized that the two men have committed “the most heinous crime”.
He said, “What happened, in this case, is truly awful. It was the stuff of nightmares. How one would react in such circumstances is unpredictable. One may well want to unburden oneself of guilt, but later have second thoughts.”
A large crowd waited outside the court to know what the verdict would be and Judge Olsen did not disappoint.
He eventually sentenced the men to a life imprisonment.
