Nigerian singer Candy Bleakz recently shared her story on “Trending” with KimOprah, revealing a close call with signing to powerhouse label YBNL Nation in 2015. While expressing her happiness for label mate Temmie Ovwasa who ultimately secured the deal, Bleakz shed light on the challenges faced by female artists in the Nigerian music industry.
Bleakz openly discussed her aspirations of becoming the “YBNL Princess,” a title hinting at a potentially career-defining moment. However, her hopes were dashed when Olamide, the label boss, unveiled Temmie Ovwasa as the official signee.
Beyond the missed opportunity, Bleakz delved into the complex issue of female image in the Nigerian music scene. She expressed frustration at the constant scrutiny around appearance, where being “pretty” or “sexy” can be seen as a distraction, while not adhering to these expectations can also be detrimental.
