The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and his wife, Sophie Grégoire, are separating after 18 years of marriage.
Trudeau, 51, announced the separation on his Instagram page on Wednesday.
He said that the decision to separate was jointly taken after “many meaningful and difficult conversations.”
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” Trudeau further said.
He asked that their privacy be respected for the well-being of their children.
A statement from the PM’s office said they both have signed a legal separation agreement.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” the statement said.
Trudeau was sworn in as Prime Minister in 2015, while Sophie is a former model and TV host.
The couple got married in 2005.
