The CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup will see major new reforms with effect from 2017, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt on Wednesday.

A report on the 38th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), held in Mexico City, Mexico, indicated that CAF was ready to make the changes.

According to the report on the CAF website, 16 clubs divided into four groups of four will participate at the group stages instead of the current eight at the pool stage.

The new format was one of the key highlights of the speech by CAF President Issa Hayatou, in his address at the General Assembly on Wednesday.

The assembly was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was at the supreme and legislative meeting of CAF for the first time since assuming the leadership of FIFA.

He was accompanied by Samuel Eto’o, Luis Figo and Zvonimir Boban, who are part of the football legends invited by FIFA for a gala match at the Azteca stadium.

Hayatou also unveiled the CAF’s progression in the wake of the new reforms implemented by FIFA, now at its implementation phase.

He disclosed the establishment, composition and the roadmap of a working group on CAF reforms to the delegates, who are representing the 54 member-associations.

The working group is to be chaired by CAF Executive Committee member Mohamed Raouraoua, and it is expected to submit its report in September.

The report will however be subject to the approval of the Executive Committee and the General Assembly.

In line with this, an Extraordinary General Assembly has been fixed for Sept. 29 in Cairo, Egypt to proceed with the adoption of the reforms.(NAN)
