Businesswoman laments as UBA account gets wiped clean by fraudsters

2 Min Read

An Akwa-Ibom State-based businesswoman, Peace Usen, has demanded explanations from the United Bank for Africa (UBA) after all the funds in her savings account with the bank were cleared under mysterious circumstances.

According to an FIJ report, Usen said that the bank authorised the withdrawal of N9,000, which was all the funds she had in the account, despite her not initiating such a transaction.

She said that when she got an SMS alert that the deduction was made via Paystack, a popular payment gateway in Nigeria, she reached out to the company for clarification.

“I hardly use my UBA account for any kind of transaction because they usually have a lot of issues, but recently, I had to use it because my other ATM card expired.

“I used the account only last month, and on June 30, I got a debit alert of N9000. That was all I had in the account. The transaction was done via Paystack.

“I sent a message to Paystack asking questions,” FIJ quoted Usen as saying.

The distraught UBA customer said that Paystack informed her that the debit was connected to a business called “Bangbet”.

She said it was the first time she was hearing of any company by that name, noting that she could not have had any dealing with a customer whose name she barely knew.

“Paystack asked me to reach out to my bank so they could file a fraud claim on the transaction.

“Besides, my card is usually always with me in my purse, and I haven’t been using it for a while. I don’t stay with anybody also, so I find it hard to believe my card was compromised,” Usen stated.

The FIJ report stated that UBA did not reply to a request for information on the matter.
