Nigerian music artist BNXN, formerly known as Buju, has voiced his agreement with Burna Boy’s recent controversial statement that a significant number of Nigerian musicians create music without substantial content.
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Burna Boy stirred up a debate by asserting that afrobeats lacks lyrical substance and is essentially void of any meaning. During an Instagram live session, BNXN echoed Burna Boy’s sentiment, emphasizing that only a select few artists within the industry are crafting music with genuine substance and depth.
During the live session, BNXN expressed his connection with Burna Boy, lauding the Grammy-winning artist for his distinctiveness. He further remarked that both Burna Boy and himself bring a unique essence to their music, setting them apart from others in the industry. BNXN emphasized that their style of music cannot be replicated elsewhere, offering a promise of authenticity to their listeners.
Drawing from Burna Boy’s interview, BNXN shared his view that the musician’s message was misunderstood by many. He asserted that misunderstandings arise when people fail to grasp the deeper context of statements. While he personally found no issue with Burna Boy’s comments, he pointed out that the crux of the matter was Burna Boy’s omission of his own involvement in the “afrobeats” genre.
