90% of bandits, kidnappers are Nigerians – Buratai says after meeting Buhari

2 Min Read

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has dispelled claims that majority of bandits, kidnappers and other criminals fomenting trouble in the north are foreigners.

In an interaction with State House correspondents after a Monday meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, the army chief said 90 per cent of the criminals are Nigerians.

Buratai, who noted that terrorism and kidnapping were not new in Nigeria, however said that they would be a thing of the past if all Nigerians were committed to ridding the country of the menace.

He appealed to Nigerians to share information with security agencies to enable them conquer insecurity in the land.

The army boss also called on the press to avoid giving publicity to criminal elements, saying it would only embolden them to involve in more criminality.

The Herald can report that Buratai’s Monday closed-door meeting with the Commander-in-Chief came barely a month after Buhari warned the service chiefs against giving excuses for failing to live up to the task.

Buhari equally said that their best was not enough, stressing that he would not tolerate a deterioration of the security challenge in the country.
