Buhari’s summon not to embarrass him – Reps

2 Min Read
Kalu

The House of Representatives has said that the invitation extended to President Muhammadu Buhari was in no way to embarrass him.

Spokesman of the House, Hon. Benjamin Kalu disclosed this on Thursday.

The House last week invited the president to appear before it on Thursday (today) to address rising insecurity in the country.

However, a day before, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami SAN said that the National Assembly lacked the constitutional powers to summon the president over the matter.

President Buhari initially pledged to honour the invitation but did not put in an appearance on Thursday.

Unconfirmed reports said that the president did not honour the invitation of the House as there was a plot to humiliate him.

Kalu, who spoke with newsmen n Abuja, said that the House invited Buhari for engagement with the house on ways to address security challenges in the country.

He said that the idea of the invitation was to have a feedback mechanism on the security situation in the country, adding that the partnership established by the 9th assembly with the executive would be sustained.

He, however, said that since Nigeria was operating a democracy hinged on party supremacy, the president can decide to follow the advice of his part on any issue.

“The President is not more powerful than the party, but if he took a decision and his party took another, he must oblige the party,” he said.

Kalu said that the house did not act in error by inviting the president, adding that the house had the right to investigate issues bothering the country.
