Buhari’s Aide Slams SARS

2 Min Read

The Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Ade Ipaye, has lambasted the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), saying that the activities of some bad eggs within the unit negatively impacted democracy and development in the country.

Then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had ordered the reform of the police unit over series of complaints, including extortion, intimidation and extrajudicial killing, levelled against it.

Speaking at a police reform programme on Thursday, Ipaye, who is attached to Osinbajo’s office, hailed the ordered reform.

He said, “That the Special Anti-Robbery Squad needs to be reformed is not questionable. That public governance, democracy and development are being adversely affected by the distortions of F-SARS is common knowledge.

“What is wrong is well-known. The problems have been discussed threadbare and solutions exist. The only rationale for so little action or reform a cynic may see is that no concerted effort has been made to prioritise accountability for police misconduct and performance.”

Ipaye noted that a responsive and functional police force could serve to attract or scare away potential investors, adding that these were some of the reasons that the Federal Government ordered a reform of SARS.
