President Muhammadu Buhari will for the third time since assuming office preside over the Council of State meeting at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja today.
The Council of State is made up of former leaders of the country, the current Vice President, all former Chief Justices of the Federation, all the 36 state governors, the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation and presided over by the incumbent President.
Those expected at the meeting include former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan and Shehu Shagari.
Others include former military Heads of State, Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, and Abdulsalami Abubakar and former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.
The duties of the Council of State includes advising the president in the exercise of his powers with respect to national census , prerogative of mercy , award of national honours, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Judicial Council and the National Population Commission.
The Council also has the constitutional responsibility of advising the President on maintenance of public order in the country or any part of it.
Under Buhari, the two previous meetings of the council occurred in October 2015 and September 2016.
