2 Min Read

The President of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has handed down an order halting exploitation activities of hydrocarbon deposit in bakassi peninsula pending the receipt of the report on the Green Tree Agreement by the joint technical committee.

The order comes in time with the denial of the Cameroonian President, Paul Biya about the involvement of his country in providing a safe haven for Boko Haram terrorists.

Speaking at a joint conference to mark the end of the two-day working visit of the Cameroonian president, Buhari assured the Cameroonian president that there was no rason for the nation’s citizens to worry over the Peninsula as the committee’s outcome will determine the next line of action in relation with the International Court of Justice, ICJ’s resolution.

The Cameroonian President said: “Yes, I have heard of this information, I heard it in New York during conference that Cameroun serves as base for Boko Haram, but what can Cameroun benefit from that? Is it the ideologies? Are we going to benefit from finances? No, it
was just a bad press and Cameroun remains focused and committed to the fight against Boko Haram,”.

The Nigerian and Cameroonian president however both condemn the activities of the Boko Haram sect. they also noted and lauded the efforts of the military in curbing the Islamist Jihadist sect.

In a communique made available to the press, President Buhari and President Biya also welcomed discussion on the best penalty for the sect members arrested in each of their countries.

The need for a firm judicial system which will remain unbais in cases where trials were needed was also stressed.
